PRISON REFORM PLAN IN AMERICA

Posted in Uncategorized by thecuriousmail on April 1, 2009

american-prison-inmatePresident Obama announced today fundamental reform to the  American penal system. Citing the Global Financial Crisis, and America’s prison population which now numbers the largest in the world (some 2.3 million), and with America having the highest documented  incarceration rate in the world, prisoners serving 5 or more years imprisonment are now to be given the opportunity of serving their sentence in a medically-induced  coma.  Each year in the coma would count double, so a prisoner sentenced to 10 years jail could serve the sentence in full in 5 years in a coma. Projected savings to the American goverment are expected to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Prisoners electing to be put in a coma will be required to complete a waiver and indemnify the goverment against any and all claims resulting from their medical treatment. President Obama has indicated further fiscal savings will be possible should the goverment agree to outside medical experimentation on the coma prisoners. Full details of the plan are still emerging, but it is believed the first prisoner has agreed to be placed into a coma. The prisoner, George W Bush, was found guilty of corruption and incompetence and sentenced to 12 years imprisonment in a trial last December. Mr Bush was believed to have commented: “When I wake up I’ll want a burger. And to go shopping. If flares aren’t back in. And to see my wife of course. And John. John’s a  special friend.”  Other governments have expressed interest in monitoring the plan, with a view to introducing similar measures in their own countries.

Sounds like a great idea. Eventually they might run out of people to run round and round the hamster wheel that powers their airconditioners though.
